That's where we are with this backyard renovation.

But just because I'one thousand tired of spending cash on our project, doesn't mean I'm willing to scrap the whole thing.

Oh no, I'm likewise stubborn for that.

And information technology's a practiced thing, too, because our patio article of furniture needed a major facelift.

Yous see, our patio set is about 9 years old by at present, simply technically information technology's still in decent condition.

Then at that place's no point in purchasing new patio furniture, particularly after the unexpected expense of edifice the kids' storage shed.

Seriously, it's and so wearisome seeing the budget expand. It was time to evaluate our options.

Options for Updating Our Old Patio Set

1. Buy New Cushions

This is definitely the easiest pick…if y'all take a patio set that fits standard sized cushions. Unfortunately, at that place are no store-bought options that fit our set.

Plus, patio cushions can get expensive fast! At around $20 per absorber (on the cheap terminate), my wallet wants to cry.

two. Brand New Cushions Myself

Whoa in that location. I'm no seamstress. It would accept a major learning curve for me to really make decent looking cushions. And, again, outdoor fabric is crazy expensive.

Let's just say that choice is best left as a future project.

3. Use Stain to Update the Patio Cushions

Now we're onto something. Fabric stain is inexpensive and easy to get. But there are some concerns:

  • What if the staining procedure make the cushion covers compress also much?
  • Will the stain run or bleed if the cushions get rained on?
  • Stain will change the color, only about likely won't comprehend the pattern.

iv. Paint the Patio Cushions

Well, there! I'm game for painting simply well-nigh anything. There are a couple options here: 1) spray painted patio cushions, or 2) using a bonding amanuensis with latex or acrylic pigment.

You've probably already figured out what I did. Yeah, I actually spray painted my patio cushions. And it only cost about $lx.

Honestly, I'll spray paint just about anything…from furniture to one-time bottles to old paper crafts.

So why not spray paint patio cushions?

Testing Out Spray Painted Patio Cushions

Admittedly, I was a flake nervous about the whole process. and then I grabbed one of the patio prepare'south throw pillows and did a little test run and give thanks goodness I did!

As you see beneath, it took a full three layers to get decent coverage of the fabric, though the pattern isn't completely covered.

Learn all the tips and tricks to get the best results from spray painted patio cushions...and the truth about whether or not it's worth the the effort.

Simply it gave me plenty confidence to move ahead and pigment the rest of the prepare.

All it took was three very messy days of piece of work, and all 8 of our cushions were completed.

Don't get me wrong, It was alot of piece of work. But the cushions are no longer drab. They're vivid and cheery and gear up for summer.

Hopefully they'll hold up for another nine years.

Key things to know about spray painted patio cushions:

i. The outset coat or two will await horrible

No, really. They'll look completely terrible.

You'll want to go cry in a panic and wonder why on Earth you chose to spray paint your patio cushions.

Merely have a deep breath and know that it will get improve…eventually.

2. The Texture of Your Cloth will Never Be the Aforementioned

Paint is simply not as soft as material, and it never will be.

The best style to draw it is that it feels a bit like a screen print on a t-shirt.

If you're doing this for an indoor chair, you lot might not similar the results. But outdoor cushions aren't that costly anyhow, right?

3. Don't Use Sandpaper Between Coats

I'm not certain who started that recommendation, but it seems to bear witness upward regularly.

Let me tell you, even with fine grit sandpaper and trying to exist every bit gentle every bit possible, sandpaper did nothing just snag my cushions.

Non cool.

After the first snag, I switched to 0000 grade steel wool and was much happier.

Considering it'due south and then fine, steel wool really softens up the cushions. It also helps to get rid of any rough spots that effect from spray painted patio cushions.

I accept no doubt that this is the fundamental to keeping your cushions soft plenty to be comfortable.

When I was diligent enough to sand very well between every glaze with steel wool, the material is but slightly stiffer than information technology was originally. And since these are outdoor cushions, people await them to be stiffer than indoor fabric, anyway.

4. Lightly dampen the Material Before You Pigment

The h2o helps the paint become into all of the natural grooves of the fabric instead of just sitting on top. Equally a result, your cushions won't exist quite and so stiff as they could be.

Sadly, I forgot this footstep until I was already 3 coats in. But I did notice that the fourth glaze-with slightly damp material-dried much more evenly.

v. Patterns and Prints Will Show Through

I gave the tops of my cushions 5 coats of spray paint, and you lot can even so slightly meet the arabesque pattern on our side chairs.

But, if you don't love the pattern of your original fabric, you're likely to be disappointed.

6. Plan to Employ a LOT of Spray Pigment

I originally planned for 3 coats per cushion, merely ended upwardly applying 4 or 5 coats, depending on the design and whether it was the meridian or bottom of the cushion.

Yeah, I got tired and lazy, and left the bottoms a lilliputian less covered. Don't tell anyone, okay?

Now, let's go started with the good office!

How to Spray Paint Patio Cushions

Materials:

  • Mop Saucepan
  • Scrub brush
  • Dish lather
  • Hose with a jet nozzle
  • one.five – 2 cans of spray paint per absorber. (I used Valspar Project Perfect in Satin terminate)
  • A damp rag
  • Steel wool, 0000 grade
  • Heavy Duty Rubber gloves

Directions:

First, Thoroughly Clean Your Cushions

  1. Mix a small amount of dish lather with water in a bucket.
  2. Using a scrub castor, scrub all the clay and grime off your old cushions.

  3. With the can about 6-12 inches away from the cushion, apply the first coat using light, fifty-fifty movements.
  4. Let the spray paint to dry, and and then rub the cushions lightly with steel wool. Be sure to wearable sturdy gloves so the steel wool doesn't cutting your hands. Do not rub also difficult, or yous will rub off most of the spray paint. Dust off any steel wool shards before moving on.

Would I spray pigment my patio cushions again?

If I knew before starting what I know now, I'one thousand not sure I would have actually spray painted my patio cushions.

Don't go me incorrect, I love them.

But information technology took about five coats per cushion to get the coverage I wanted, meaning I purchased nigh 15 cans of spray paint for my 8 large cushions.

That's a whole lot of spray paint.

Then again, at roughly $four per can and $3 for a pack of steel wool, that'southward only $63.

Apparently a new patio ready is significantly more expensive. You tin't even re-comprehend or buy new cushions for that price.

So if you lot take the patience, and the fourth dimension, and if you lot're only painting 2 or 4 cushions, I say become for information technology.

If you're doing more than that, yous might desire to endeavour painting with latex paint, fabric medium and a roller (or a spray gun!.  A quart of paint is less than $60, and rolling might (emphasis on might) have less time.

Don't be surprised if yous run across me requite that a try onetime.

Even even so, it's nice to take a cheery patio set amidst all this rain. And at least information technology didn't cost a fortune.

What'due south the craziest thing you always spray painted?
